Honouring nearly 200 years

THBC provides the opportunity for novice and experienced oarsmen alike to have an excellent environment in which to train and improve.  We also want to ensure that we are providing the environment for those to pursue the sport at any level and from any background, making the boat club inclusive to all while improving student wellbeing.  It is widely recognised that physical activity plays a fundamental role in wellbeing and helps develop a sense of community.

Founded in 1827, Trinity Hall Boat Club is one of the oldest boat clubs on the river Cam.  Trinity Hall is one of the few boat clubs where both first boats (men and women) have been Head of the Cambridge University Lent and May Bumps and have always remained among the top college crews.

What is a Telemetry System

In very basic terms, the system places strain gauges and measuring technology into the boat which measures multiple metrics of the rowing stroke and produces data that has previously not been able to be measured or utilised.

The Powerline System produced by Peach Innovations (a Cambridge-based company) is a world-leading piece of technology and is seen as the gold standard of in-boat biomechanics support.

The Peach system measures the forces, angles and speeds needed to evaluate crew technique and performance. Among its many features, you can:

  • measure individual power output within a crew
  • give rowers real-time, in the boat, feedback on what they are doing
  • give rowers incredibly accurate feedback on their technique and will help rowers and their coaches work on particular areas of technique
  • correlate force curves between crew members to create a more unified crew
  • create post outing/race analysis reports and share aspects with the crew/individuals to aid understanding and assist progress

What we would like to do

Raising £14,000 will enable us to invest in the telemetry system.  This includes all the equipment for the rowers and boat, as well as a radio transmitter and a coach display to allow the coach to see what the system is producing in real time allowing immediate feedback to aid understanding and accelerate progress.

The impact of your gift

"The Peach system helps provide the coach with invaluable information that was previously unobtainable and unmeasurable while also providing essential descriptions of the rowing stroke so that the rowers can see exactly what they're doing and give a clear picture of how they can improve.

For almost 200 years THBC has been a leader and always at the forefront of developments in the sport at Cambridge (and beyond!) whether that be adoption of professional coaching, full time boatmen, using the latest boat designs, being the early adopters of new oar shapes etc.

If an investment could be made in telemetry, THBC once again has the opportunity to be an outlier among Cambridge Colleges and to be a real leader …..this time in the use of technology. The data that would be produced would give us the opportunity to help maximise the potential of our rowers and our crews.”
